What is Integrative Medicine?
Integrative medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting from the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Like any other Functional medicine practitioners, Dr Ogunjobi spend time with his patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, functional medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.
Why Do We need Integrative Medicine?
Our younger generation is suffering from depression, anxiety, autism and ADHD. Our older generation is suffering from Parkinson’s, Osteoporosis and dementia and everyone else in between is suffering from obesity, diabetes , cholesterol, hypertension and stress.
How is Integrative Medicine Different?
Integrative medicine involves understanding the origins, prevention, and treatment of complex, chronic disease. Hallmarks of a functional medicine approach include:
We thank you for taking time to read this piece. This type of clinical interaction is not like the general consultation either in with a General Practitioner or any other medical specialists. Therefore it requires greater commitment and sustained determination to discover the root cause.
Do you know that Vascular diseases like Hypertension, Coronary Artery diseases and Heart attack are sub-clinical diseases? They started about 10 to 30 years or more prior to any cardiovascular events. In some studies, there are findings suggesting this early evidence of cardiovascular disease in the form of fatty streaks documented in children in the first and second decades of life2. The process began as a dysfunction of the lining of the blood vessel wall, followed by changes in compliance of arteries and later leading to stiffness of the vessels wall with no clinical symptoms. These changes similarly occur in the heart quietly for many years. This is why at Zenith Medical Centre, we have invested in technologies that allow earlier identification of cardiovascular dysfunction (abnormal function) before any structural changes have occurred.
We have now acquired Vitalscan machine to assess your Autonomic Function Testing (ANS), Resting ECG Assessment, Arterial Vascular Assessment, Pulse Wave Velocity and Ankle Brachial Indices (ABI). That is not all; we also check for Sudomotor sympathetic skin potential (SudoCheck), Quantitative Sudomotor Axon Reflex Test (QSART) Sympathetic Skin Response (SSR); Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) and Body Composition Analysis.
With the above tests, we can uncover major illnesses (that are still quite) and other hidden illnesses even before you are given a diagnosis 2.
In conclusion, we do not advise new patients to Zenith Medical Centre to just come in for Functional Medicine consultation or treatment. As we are a general practice, initial evaluation will need to be conducted as a normal general consultation and patient will be advised if or not he or she will be suitable for a Functional Medicine approach.
